Is a balance transfer allowed between cards from the same bank?

Most issuers won't allow balance transfers between cards at their institution. When choosing a card, make sure it is from a different issuer than the card whose balance you want to transfer.

Be careful with purchases on a balance transfer card

If you’re carrying a balance transfer, but don’t also have a 0% intro APR promotion for purchases, then you could be charged interest on new purchases from the moment you swipe your card — even before your monthly payment is due. If you want to make a purchase (but are carrying a balance) be sure the card has 0% intro APR on purchases.

There's a right way to swipe

Credit cards with rewards & 0% intro APR offers are excellent, but remember, they are a tool to help you get the most out of your spending. The Ascent motto to follow:

  1. Pay off your card in full each month.
  2. Choose a card whose features are a good fit for you.
  3. Don't spend more than you already would.

Follow this and you'll be making your money work overtime for you. Live richly, not risky.

Getting out of debt and building your credit

Is your credit score below 670? If so, you’re less likely to get approved for these cards — but visitthis pagefor our top-rated options for getting out of debt and building your credit.

FAQs

How hard is it to get approved for balance transfer card? ›

Balance transfer credit cards typically require good credit or excellent credit (scores 670 and greater) in order to qualify.

Can balance transfers be denied? ›

Your request for a balance transfer might be declined if the transfer amount is above your credit limit, your account is in poor standing or you're trying to transfer a balance to a card from the same credit card issuer.

What credit score do you need for a balance transfer card? ›

It may not be possible to get approved for a balance transfer card with bad credit. Card issuers typically require a good or excellent credit score to qualify, which is a FICO® Score of 670 or higher on an 850-point scale. But there are other ways to strategically pay down credit card debt.

Is it a good idea to transfer credit card balances? ›

A balance transfer credit card is an excellent way to refinance existing credit card debt, especially since credit card interest rates can go as high as 30%. By transferring your balance to a card with a 0% intro APR, you can quickly dodge mounting interest costs and give yourself repayment flexibility.

Do balance transfers always get approved? ›

Balance transfers require an approval process, which means your balance transfer request can be denied if you have a high credit utilization.

Is there a catch to balance transfer cards? ›

A balance transfer isn't a get-out-of-debt-free card. Balance transfers typically come with fees, and you'll likely have to pay interest on whatever balance you transfer. Here are some things to keep in mind before opting to use a balance transfer card.

What is the problem with balance transfer? ›

If punctuality isn't your forte, a balance transfer might make things worse. “On top of a balance transfer credit card's standard late fee, making just one late payment or missing a payment altogether could forfeit your introductory 0 percent rate — negating the purpose of the transfer.

Why aren't I getting any balance transfer offers? ›

This could be because you've reached the maximum number of balance or money transfers, or your available credit is too low. We update the offers regularly, so check back again.

Why won't Chase let me do a balance transfer? ›

Like most issuers, Chase doesn't allow cardmembers to transfer a balance from one Chase credit card account to another Chase credit card account. If you have debt on a Chase card that you want to transfer, you should choose a balance transfer card from another issuer.

What is a 5 24 rule? ›

Many card issuers have criteria for who can qualify for new accounts, but Chase is perhaps the most strict. Chase's 5/24 rule means that you can't be approved for most Chase cards if you've opened five or more personal credit cards (from any card issuer) within the past 24 months.

How do I know if I qualify for a balance transfer? ›

If your credit score is above 670, and you have debt you could manage to pay off over a 0 percent introductory interest period, a balance transfer may be a great tool to help you pay down high-interest debt.

What triggers a balance transfer offer? ›

Card issuers can determine who is eligible for a balance transfer, based on things like income and credit scores. Generally, the higher your credit score the better your odds are for getting approved. While it's possible to get approved for a balance transfer offer with bad credit, you might pay a much higher APR.

What is the disadvantage of balance transfer? ›

You may have to pay a balance transfer fee
