A screw thread is a helical structure used to convert between rotational and linear movement or force. A screw thread is a ridge wrapped around a cylinder or cone in the form of a helix, with the former being called a straight thread and the latter called a tapered thread.

Pitch, P: The axial distance between equivalent points on adjacent threads. Crest: The top most point or surface of a thread. Root: The bottom of the groove. Lead: The axial distance travelled by the thread during 360° revolution of the screw.

The three basic parts of a screw are the head, threaded shank and point. There are different types of each, so it's important to know what works best for your particular job.

Grooves. The spiral cuts or curves that we see on a screw are called grooves. The grooves act as a force multiplier, reducing the force needed to penetrate objects. They converts rotational motion of screw to linear motion to penetrate objects.

That's the thread, the spirals that wrap around the internal or external diametrical surface. External threads are called male while internal threads, such as what we see with nuts, are female.

The crest of a thread is the prominent part of a thread, whether internal or external. The root is the bottom of the groove between the two flanking surfaces of the thread whether internal or external. The flanks of a thread are the straight sides that connect the crest and the root.

You simply count the number of thread peaks along a one-inch length. You'll also measure the major diameter of the screw, as shown above. These two measurements will combine to give you the screw size you need. For instance, if your major diameter is ¼″ and you have 20 threads per inch, then your screw size is ¼″ x 20.

For Unified inch screw threads there are six standard classes of fit: 1B, 2B, and 3B for internal threads; and 1A, 2A, and 3A for external threads. All are considered clearance fits. That is, they assemble without interference. The higher the class number, the tighter the fit.

The most common form consists of a cylindrical shaft with helical grooves or ridges called threads around the outside.
