Classic Horse Names: We have a few!
Historically, horses are given names representing some characteristic important to the owner. Classic race horse names include Man O War, Bold Ruler, Secretariat, Native Dancer—monikers that imply grace, strength and winning attitudes.
Some of my favorite show horse names imply the owner has a sense of humor—a pony named Mama’s Fur Coat is at the top of my list. The best one, however, could easily be a mare whose first name was Helen and her last name, Wheels!
Some horse names are deceptive. I once purchased a big field hunter called Norman. That sounded safe enough. After a few harrowing rides, including some impressive “airs above the ground,” I learned that his real name, changed to encourage his sale, was the more fitting, Lucifer!
At Blackberry Farm, many of our horses are named for important aspects of the farm. Last year, we retired a favorite, a big quarter horse gelding we called Cheez. Named for the cheese program at Blackberry Farm, Cheez was the quintessential beginner horse. Everyone loved Cheez. He was a mild cheese, no peppers in him! Serendipitously, his best friend was Mac.
Another Blackberry Farm classic is Harlan. Named for Harlan Estate wines, his name was suggested by our Sommelier, Andy Chabot, due to h is appearance – full bodied and red! In the same genre, we have a red and white paint horse, Van Winkle – he’s smooth and easy. The better you get to know him, the more fun he is!
We have a big stout buckskin horse we call Bramble. Named for the Blackberry brambles in our cove, he is strong and resilient, but appreciates a gentle hand. His kind nicker is as sweet as a blackberry in summertime. We can’t pick blackberries in the winter, but you can pick Bramble to ride and enjoy an adventure on horseback.
