Douglas Bounty - High on Life Guide - IGN (2024)

The Douglas Bounty is one of two assignments you'll need to complete after taking down your first crime boss, 9-Torg. An unpredictable party animal with a penchant for torture and hardcore drugs, Douglas has the distinct honor of holding the title of G3 Chief of Training and Torture. But before you can riddle Douglas with bullets, you'll need to navigate the arid Port Terrene outskirts to reach his base in Dreg Town.

Douglas Bounty Walkthrough

After killing 9-Torg and returning to Blim City to purchase the Dodge Unit from the pawn shop, interact with the Bounty-5k and you'll be given the option to select either the Douglas Bounty or Krubis Bounty. If you accept the Douglas Bounty first, enter the portal and you'll be transported to the Out-Outskirts in Port Terrene.

However, if you accepted Krubis' Bounty first, you'll need to settle the argument between Gene and Lizzie before jumping through the Bounty-5k's portal to take down Douglas.

Head Towards Old Town

As you enter the unforgiving Out-Outskirts, use your Bounty Suit's scanner to create a path toward your current objective. Though you could just walk north of the portal to reach your objective, consider exploring the Outskirts while paying close attention to the radar on the bottom left side of your HUD. The radar will display blue cones to lead you to the various Lugloxes hidden in the area.

advertisem*nt

When you reach the marker pinged by your scanner, open the nearby Luglox, then use the grapple bug to jump into the Shipwreck. Explore the Shipwreck and you'll find several Lugloxes, one of which houses a Trash Bag Babies Collectible.

Once you're content with your search, exit the Shipwreck and defeat the various enemies just outside. In addition to being home to various critters, the open area outside of the Shipwreck houses Lugloxes and a few Warp Signals. With the Warp Signals, you can use any of the Warp Discs currently in your inventory to summon their corresponding Warp Base.

Using the Warp Signals leads to fun, world-building interactions that you would miss otherwise, but ultimately they don't affect the Main Story.

Find a Path Across the Gorge

Continue on your path and when you approach the objective, you'll find a construction crew that isn't keen on letting you cross the bottomless pit that leads to Old Town. While you could just "move past them" as Kenny suggests, you also have the option of killing them before proceeding. Regardless of your Choice, drop down into Old Town Gorge and cross the bridge on the right.

Crouch, jump, and dash through the cliffs until you reach a gap that's out of reach. Here, you'll need to ricochet Kenny's Glob Shot off of the G3 graffiti so the Glob can knock over the Splatform and allow you to cross.

When you reach the Old Town gates, speak to Ole' Wet Grundy to learn more about Old Town, Dreg Town, and Douglas. When the conversation comes to a close, he'll open the gate for you.

Enter Dreg Town

advertisem*nt

Once you've defeated the group of enemies on Main Street, explore the region as much or as little as you'd like before heading to the Dreg Town entrance to speak to the gate guard. The gate guard will note that he can't let you in because there are too many recruits causing trouble in town. Because of this, he'll indirectly suggest that you kill the troublemaking G3 recruits.

G3 recruits are scattered throughout Old Town, and though the groups vary slightly, the order in which you kill the recruits doesn't seem to matter. Now that you've cleaned up the east side, west side, and central avenue, return to the Dreg Town entrance so the gate guard can let you in. Enter the Dreg Town gates and ride the elevator down to Dreg Town.

Search for Douglas

advertisem*nt

Now that you're in Dreg Town, follow the roadway, go up the stairs, and cross the elevated walkway. From this point, go down the steps and head down the path on the right to grapple across a short gap. Grapple once more to tether onto the zipline and fight through the army of G3 minions across the way. With the enemies wiped out, feel free to explore the area for loot, and don't forget to snatch the Warp Crystals from the Warp Bases before continuing your journey.

Work your way up the incline in the back of the area and zipline to the platform on the other end. Follow your scanner up to the G3 Recruitment Center where you'll be denied entrance because you're not a G3 recruit sporting yellow goop armor. To gain entrance to the recruitment center, exit the room and trek to the opposite side of the platform.

Speak to the mysterious cloaked alien shown above. This self-proclaimed "Goop Guy" will prompt you to head down the alley to the left. Walk into the cage and you'll get covered in goop. Return to the G3 recruitment center and watch the G3 orientation video. When the video wraps up, complete the Battlefield Training by killing off the enemies. Initially, your fellow recruits will be distracted by the critters in the battle arena, but once they've been killed off, the recruits will become hostile and train their sights on you.

After the final enemy falls, a door will open at the back of the room that leads to the obstacle course. The obstacle course is filled with high-voltage electrical panels that shock in a pattern. Before diving head first into any portion of the course, observe a cycle of the electrical panels to determine openings that you can use to traverse the area. As you progress, your dash will prove invaluable when avoiding damage but be careful not to spam it too much or you may find yourself without fuel as the electrical current is heading your way.

When you complete the course, you'll watch a second video where Douglas will report that your next exercise doesn't begin for an hour. Though far from practical, you could sit in the G3 classroom for an hour and Douglas will appear onscreen at the 15-minute, 30-minute, 45-minute, and 1-hour mark to deliver new messages.

However, even if you wait, there still isn't a second exercise. To continue, look to the right side of the room and crawl through the hole in the gate. Follow the tubing within this area and crawl through the vent to reach a zipline on the other end.

Help Dr. Joopy Escape

advertisem*nt

Immediately after riding the zipline, you'll be introduced to Dr. Joopy – a mild-mannered octopus-like alien. Dr. Joopy will mention that Douglas kidnapped his family and that he's been trying to save them but he's been unable to get through the pipes.

advertisem*nt

Dr. Joopy will unlock the door for you and in the next room, you'll be faced with your first pipe puzzle. As you solve pipe puzzles, you'll notice some pipes are lit up with green light. This means that Dr. Joopy can pass through them. When the pipes aren't lit, this indicates that something still needs to be done for Dr. Joopy to move through.

So to solve pipe puzzles you'll ultimately be focused on shooting the white panels to manipulate the pipes until you've created a full-green trail from Dr. Joopy all the way to the exit.

To solve this puzzle and allow Dr. Joopy passage, shoot each of the white-colored panels once.

Now, climb up the ledges at the back of the room and exit through the door Dr. Joopy will open for you. Tether onto the nearby zipline and you'll get dropped off in a massive G3 battle arena. The arena is full of various enemies so try your best to avoid getting swarmed, especially by the red grunts that have a larger HP pool. The battle arena features tons of verticality so it's in your best interest to use the grapple insects and the ziplines to relocate when under heavy fire or to reach enemies that are difficult to take down from distance.

As you reach the later stages of the battle, a massive G3 enemy will fall into the middle of the arena. Because this enemy has a notably larger health pool than the other enemies here, try your best to keep an eye out for his arrival. When you see him, immediately get to higher ground to avoid his attacks. With a safe distance and better vantage point, you can shoot your Gatlians freely. Just don't get tunnel-visioned or the other grunts in the arena will creep up on you.

After surviving the waves of enemies, collect the Warp Crystal and exit through the large door to continue your search for Douglas. When you reach the top of the stairs, you'll discover another pipe puzzle.

Help Dr. Joopy Escape, Again

Significantly more complex than the last, this pipe puzzle has two possible solutions and you'll need to view the puzzle from different angles to solve it. With this in mind, we'll detail how to reach the first solution and provide a video walkthrough on how to get the puzzle's second solution.

Both solutions are valid and do not impact the story or dialogue whatsoever.

Pipe Puzzle 2 - Solution 1

  1. Walk to the far right near Dr. Joopy, look down, and shoot the bottom-right panel twice.
  2. From the pipe housing Dr. Joopy, look forward and shoot the right panel once.
  3. Look to the top left and shoot the right panel three times.
  4. Wrap around the piping and shoot the top panel twice.
  5. Look slightly left and shoot the top panel once.
  6. Look toward the end of the puzzle and shoot the bottom panel once to solve it.

Pipe Puzzle 2 - Solution 2

To view the solution for this puzzle specifically, skip to the timestamp 1:22.

After solving the puzzle, grapple upward to reach the Dreg Town Center. Walk through the Town Center, defeat the enemies here, and go up the stairs to reach the area pictured below.

advertisem*nt

Shoot Kenny's Glob Shot at the yellow signs so it can ricochet and knock over the Splatform on the left, then shoot another Glob Shot at the Splatform on the right. Jump across the gap, while avoiding the passing spacecraft, and take down the enemies ahead. Next, make your way up the stairs and progress through the structure on the left to reach another zipline.

After riding the zipline, grapple off the insect and you'll reach your third and final pipe puzzle.

Help Dr. Joopy Get Inside Douglas' HQ

advertisem*nt

During this pipe puzzle, you can prompt different interactions with Dr. Joopy depending on the Gatlian you have equipped. If you have Kenny equipped during your interactions with Dr. Joopy, Kenny will have very little to say as your trusting sidekick seems focused on helping Dr. Joopy reach his family.

However, if you have Gus equipped, he proves to be the more discerning Gatlian and he grows suspicious of Dr. Joopy – more on that later.

Pipe Puzzle 3 Solution

  1. Look to the top right and shoot either panel once.
  2. Toward the center of the puzzle, shoot either panel once.
  3. Shoot the solo panel just to the right of the panel shot in step two.
  4. Directly beneath the solo panel, shoot either panel once.
  5. Look slightly to the left and shoot the left panel once or the right panel three times.

Once you've performed the fifth step you'll have completed half of the puzzle and you'll hear a horn blare. The horn indicates that you've reached a checkpoint and you can leave the area or end your gaming session without having to solve the first half of the puzzle again.

After reaching the checkpoint, Dr. Joopy will emerge for some brief encouragement and if you have Kenny equipped nothing will happen. However, if you have Gus equipped he'll notice that Dr. Joopy has changed the names of his supposedly beloved children several times and Gus will urge you to shoot Dr. Joopy. Here you'll be faced with the Choice of trusting Gus' intuition and shooting Dr. Joopy or simply solving the puzzle.

advertisem*nt

If you shoot Dr. Joopy, it's immediately revealed that he's been Douglas all along. Mortally wounded, Douglas will crawl away but you'll still need to solve the pipe puzzle to collect Douglas' DNA and turn in your bounty.

If you choose not to shoot Dr. Joopy, his true identity won't be revealed until you've completely solved the pipe puzzle. To finish solving the puzzle, head to the left side of the puzzle and follow the instructions below. Step one below will refer to the sixth step in the image above, while step two will correspond to the seventh step in the image.

  1. On the far left, shoot either of the two panels in the center.
  2. Lastly, shoot either of the two panels in the lower left corner.

advertisem*nt

With the puzzle solved and with Dr. Joopy revealed to be Douglas, enter the door on the right to enter this level's boss battle.

Kill Douglas

advertisem*nt

Because you may have already mortally wounded Douglas, this boss battle varies slightly based on your Choices during the pipe puzzle. As mentioned previously, if you have Gus equipped when solving the pipe puzzle, he'll grow suspicious of Douglas/Dr. Joopy and suggest that you shoot the seemingly innocent squid.

If you chose not to shoot Douglas during the puzzle, Douglas will wiggle into his suit to begin the boss battle. Whereas, if you chose to shoot Douglas, his suit will identify that Douglas is deceased and enter an auto-piloted "Chaos Mode" forcing you to battle his super suit.

Though, this alters the narrative slightly, whether Douglas is alive or not has no impact on any gameplay elements.

The most distinct part of this boss battle is that the arena floor is lined with electrical panels identical to the ones you had to traverse during the G3 obstacle course. So in addition to avoiding Douglas and his grunts, remain vigilant of the floor and dash or grapple to avoid taking damage.

Douglas Move Set
Primary FireFires several projectiles that shoot in a large horizontal spread.
Pillar AttackGrapples between the four pillars in the stage and shoots his primary fire. Douglas typically stays on a pillar for a couple of seconds before dashing onto the next one.
Grunt SummonSummons yellow G3 grunts to the battle arena.

Tips for Killing Douglas

advertisem*nt

  • If you've read our previous walkthroughs you'd likely guess that our first tip is to use Kenny's Glob Shot to stun Douglas whenever he's on the ground. Not only does Kenny's alternate leave Douglas vulnerable, but it also stuns him out of several attacks.
  • When you fall low on health, shoot the aliens strapped to the operating tables. With four aliens in total, you can collect four Durashield Tanks for free.
  • G3 grunts can also drop Durashield Tanks so look to take them out if you're in a pinch.
  • Don't forget to utilize Gus and his alternate fire if you've already killed Krubis. Gus' shotgun deals substantial damage at close range and his ricocheting alternate fire can quickly wipe out a group of grunts, especially if you deflect the discs with Knifey.
  • Use the grapple insects as much as possible to conserve fuel. With the threat of the ground shocking you at any moment, you'll want to save your fuel as much as possible so you can use your dash to avoid taking damage.

After killing Douglas, approach his body to extract his DNA and you'll pick up the Gatlian, Sweezy. The most versatile weapon in your kit so far, Sweezy has a low-damage but rapidly firing primary fire, a charged-up shot, and an alternate fire that can freeze time.

advertisem*nt

Use Sweezy's alternate fire on the fan to create a Time Bubble that'll allow you to squeeze through. At the end of the tunnel, use another Time Bubble to exit and listen in on Garmantuous' video message before proceeding through the second fan. Next, defeat the enemies just outside the fan and use a Time Bubble to stop a spacecraft that you can use to leap across the gap.

Just ahead, enter the portal to return home and turn in the Douglas Bounty to complete this chapter of High on Life!
