How long does it take to walk from Carpark to Glenfinnan Viaduct? ›

Glenfinnan Viaduct Best View

The walk to this viewpoint takes a mere ten minutes at most. Starting at the visitor centre, you should exit the car park, turn right and walk along the side of the road until you get to the second carpark. From here, follow the path all the way to the bridge.

Even before it was made famous by the Harry Potter films, the Glenfinnan Viaduct was an iconic crossing. Set among some of Scotland's most stunning scenery—flanked by rolling green hills and roaming red deer—it's considered one of the most picturesque rail routes in Scotland.

It is the longest concrete railway bridge in Scotland at 416 yards (380 m), and crosses the River Finnan at a height of 100 feet (30 m). The West Highland Line it carries is single track, and the viaduct is 18 feet (5.5 m) wide between the parapets.

The best time to photograph the Harry Potter steam train is as it passes west-bound (towards Mallaig) over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, which is around 10.45am and 13.15pm. This will give you the best view of the steam train on the bridge, from the hillside.

Car parking is available for cars close to the visitor centre. It costs £5 (free for members). The Glenfinnan Community parking area is now open next door. It is linked to our picnic area and car park via a pedestrian bridge – please use this to reach our visitor centre and the Monument.

This has to be one of the most touristy places in Scotland, with crowds of tourists from all over the world lining up to catch a glimpse of the famous viaduct. Nevertheless, we found the walk around the viaduct, and the views of Loch Shiel in particular, very worthwhile.

The biggest town close to Glenfinnan Viaduct is Fort William. Dubbed 'the Outdoor Capital of the UK,' Fort William sits at the base of Ben Nevis and is a great jumping-off point from which to explore the West Highlands.

In fact, the Harry Potter movies filmed using The Jacobite steam train as the Hogwarts Express! And along the journey you take, you will even pass other famous Harry Potter film locations, like the famous “bridge” the Glenfinnan Viaduct as well as Loch Eilt which is the final resting place for Albus Dumbledore.

Trains. The Hogwarts Express uses two trains that can transport 168 passengers each, giving a total of 336 passengers per cycle. Each train is an articulated cable car formed of five sections: a replica of a steam locomotive and its tender plus a set of three passenger coaches each with seven passenger compartments.

The ride on the Jacobite Steam Train lasts for about 2 hours. Plenty of time to soak in the views of Scotland's epic west coast between Mallaig and Fort William.

The view of the viaduct from the visitor centre car par is rather disappointing. For the best view, drive west from the visitors' centre. About a mile out of town you will see a sign indicating a right turn. It is marked as a rail Dining Car Cafe and is co-located with the Glenfinnan rail station.

The average journey time from Fort William to Mallaig is 1 hour 24 minutes. Journey times might be slightly longer on weekends and Bank Holidays.
