Choosing the right container for your cannabis plant.

When it comes to pots, your cannabis wants one thing and one thing only: a safe, healthy place for root development. Without healthy roots, your cannabis will never thrive. Roots are in charge of water retention, nutrient absorption, anchoring the plant, and also facilitate vegetative growth. All of these functions must be considered when choosing a container.

Autoflower Cannabis Grow Cycle

Growing Cannabis with Coast of Maine Products - Coast of Maine Organic Products (13)

For a root system to develop and thrive, it will need the following:

  • Drainage: Water retention is paramount for healthy plants—without it, your cannabis will wither and die. But too much water will waterlog your plant and lead to root rot, killing roots.
  • Oxygen: Plant roots require oxygen to function properly. Choose a container that facilitates enough oxygen for root development without overexposing them to the elements—containers do this though various styles of perforation.
  • Nutrients: Roots require optimal conditions for nutrient absorption to occur. This includes pH balance, optimal temperatures, and nutrient availability.
  • Space: Roots need plenty of space to branch out. A container that is too small will cause it to become rootbound and choke the plant.

Why choose autoflowers over the regular plants? Autoflowers are small, they grow fast, produce big yields, and have amazing resistance to mold, pest and insects, plus they can flower under any light cycle.
Apart from the short strains, there are also bigger, heavier auto strains that will still flower automatically, and these are called the “SUPER” autoflowering plants.

– Typically auto plants are going through veg cycle weeks 1-3 or 4
– Typically flowers between weeks 5-8 or sometimes 12 depending on strain

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: When germinating my seeds, can I use the Stonington Blend Grower’s Mix in a solo cup and transplant, or do I need to use the seed starter?

A: We have heard from growers that they have had success with germination in Stonington Blend, but we really don’t recommend it. Seeds are very sensitive to nutrients, and germinating them in a nutrient-rich environment can actually cause them damage. Our seed starter (Sprout Island Blend) was specifically designed for germination and rooting plant cuttings. It has only a mild starter charge from the worm castings, mycorrhizae and kelp, so the seeds won’t get overwhelmed.

Q:Do I have to pH my water?

A: In most cases, no, you don’t have to pH the water. But, it is helpful to know if it is at least in the target range, because the pH level outside of the preferred range can adversely affect how your plants take on nutrients/minerals, and how easily they are made available to the roots. Cannabis likes slightly acidic soil. (preferably 6.0-6.8 – We target Stonington Blend to be a 6.5 pH) Ideally you would want your water to be in that range too. That way you can confidently know your plant is getting all of the nutrition it needs from our mix.

A more useful way to gauge what is actually going on in the soil is to test the pH of your run-off rather than the pH of the water you put in. The run-off will contain any salts that might be building up in the soil and alert you to possible problems before they occur.

Tip If you are using tapwater, let it sit in a bucket or reservoir for a few days to allow it to dechlorinate, then check the pH to make sure it is within the required range.

Q: Is this a “hot soil” for the base of the plant?

A: No. Because of Coast of Maine’s composting techniques and the way we allow the amendments to settle before we bag the soil, Stonington Blend Grower’s Mix is gentle enough to be right up against the plant.

Q:Can you ship Stonington to Canada?

A: At this time we do not ship outside of the US.
