Though Candy Melts candy is available in a wide variety of colors, sometimes it can be hard to find the exact color you need. Or perhaps you only need a little bit of colored candy and don’t want to purchase a whole bag.
In instances like these, you can use one of two tricks to create any candy color you wish. First, you can use an oil-based food coloring to color your candy. Secondly, you can melt two or more candy colors together to create your own unique shades.
As long as your food coloring is oil-based, it can be used to color Candy Melts candy. Try our Primary or Garden Candy Color Sets, which are specially formulated to work with Candy Melts.
The Primary set (yellow, orange, red, blue) and the Garden set (green, pink, violet, black) contain small jars of color that can be used individually or combined to create new colors.
However, water-based food coloring – such as Color Right food coloring or gel-based icing colors – should not be used to tint Candy Melts. The water in the food coloring can cause your candy to seize, rendering it unusable.
How to color Candy Melts candy with oil-based food coloring
To color your candy using oil-based candy colors, simply melt your candy in a small microwave-safe bowl, according to package instructions.
Using a toothpick or the tip of a knife, add a small amount of candy color to your melted candy. Mix with a spoon or spatula until combined. Continue adding color (be sure to use a clean toothpick or clean the knife between additions) until the desired shade is achieved.

Gel coloring is water based & should be used for icing, whipped toppings, cake batters & general food coloring. As we mentioned, water based coloring should never be added to chocolate as it will seize.
It's not a good idea to use water-based food coloring gels because of chocolate's sensitivity to moisture. It won't combine well. Food coloring powders are one of the best options for coloring chocolate.
Chocolate can also seize if the food colouring is a different temperature to the chocolate so this method ensures the colour is a similar temperature to melted chocolate.
Don't try to use water-based food coloring for chocolate, as it will not mix well into the blend and your chocolate candy or other confections will not come out as desired. Instead, you should opt for oil based food colorings for chocolate to ensure a smooth, even consistency and a visually pleasing finished product.
