MONTCLAIR, NJ — Finding a six-leaf clover is the stuff of magic. But that’s what happened to Sam Karp, 7, this week when he stumbled across a super-rare specimen in Montclair.
According to Karp’s mother, her son discovered the clover on Saturday in their backyard on Montclair Avenue. They’ve found some four-leafers in the past – and even a few with five leaves.
“Montclair as a whole actually seems to have a lot of mutant clovers,” she told Patch.

But this one took the cake.
“I was looking at clovers and I found a six-leaf clover in a clover patch,” the excited youth recalled. “It was big and growing out of the rest of the patch. I felt so excited since I found a six-leaf clover and I told my mom!”

What are the odds of finding a four-leaf, five-leaf or six-leaf clover? Estimates vary.
Many reports say you have a one-in-10,000 chance of finding a four-leaf clover, which would make a five-leafer a one-in-a-million find – and a six-leaf clover extraordinarily rare.
However, another study found that there are 5,076 three-leaf clovers for every four-leafer. There is a one-in-24,390 chance of finding a five-leaf clover, and a one-in-312,500 chance of coming across a six-leaf clover, it claims.
Want to do your own hunting for lucky clovers? You won’t need a ton of space to get started. There are about 10,000 clovers in a dense patch that takes up roughly 12.5 square feet, a recent blog post suggested.
