Morgott, the Omen King (2024)

Morgott, the Omen King, is a boss in Elden Ring. He is a Demigod and a Shardbearer who is encountered in Leyndell, Royal Capital. This is not an optional boss and must be defeated to unlock Mountaintops of the Giants and progress the story.

Overview[]

Early Life[]

Morgott was born of the Golden Lineage,^[1] the offspring of the first Elden Lord, Godfrey and Queen Marika, and was the twin brother of Mohg.^[2] The twins were both born as accursed Omen,^[3] and as a result were confined to the Subterranean Shunning Grounds below the capital.^[4] Because they were born of royalty, their horns were not excised.^[5] Unlike his brother, Morgott would renounce his accursed blood and seal it away within a blade,^[6] which was in turn concealed within a wooden staff he carried.

The Shattering[]

When Queen Marika shattered the Elden Ring, Morgott claimed one of the Great Runes. With Leyndell in disarray, Morgott claimed the city for himself and defended it and the Erdtree against his fellow demigods. While he succeeded in securing Leyndell, he found that the Erdtree would not admit him, or anyone else, to claim the title of Elden Lord. Despite the fact that he had been reviled as an accursed fiend by the Golden Order, Morgott swore to protect the Erdtree.

He assumed the name Margit the Fell Omen during the Shattering, slaughtering champions who approached the Erdtree in the hopes of becoming Elden Lord.^[7] Under this pseudonym, he also lead the Night's Cavalry, who assisted him in the killing of great warriors, knights and champions.^[8] Simultaneously, he ruled Leyndell as the Veiled Monarch.^[9]

After claiming two shards of the Elden Ring, the Tarnished gains entrance to Leyndell and challenges Morgott at the Elden Throne. Denouncing them and all of his demigod siblings as traitors and pillagers emboldened by ambition, he attacks the Tarnished champion. Upon his defeat, Morgott warns the Tarnished that the Erdtree would ward them off as it had done for him, and that none may claim the title of Elden Lord. Later, after setting fire to the Erdtree using the Giant's Forge and releasing the Rune of Death, the same Tarnished encounters Godfrey in the throne room, holding Morgott's body as it fades away.

Boss Fight[]

Melina and Dung Eater are both available as summons for this fight. For Dung Eater to be available, the player must have released him from his cell in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds.

Moveset[]

Phase 1[]

Morgott is a highly aggressive and fast-moving enemy, chaining together attacks in rapid succession while leaving few openings. His curved sword inflicts blood loss on impact, while the holy armaments he summons deal holy damage. He has ranged attacks, such as his throwing knives and spear, and utilises jumps, cartwheels, and dashes to close or create distance.

Phase 2[]

Once his health drops to 50%, Morgott performs an area of effect attack in which his cursed blood erupts from the ground. His blade becomes infused with his cursed blood, and he gains a number of bloodflame-based attacks. He may also summon golden blades that rain down from the sky.

Environment[]

The arena is a wide, circular platform with no obstacles, aside from the throne which will break if hit.

Notes[]

• His name might be inspired by Melkor's nickname - Morgoth. (Melkor is the main and very first antagonist of the Legendarium of Middle-earth)
• He was known as the Grace-Given, as he was presumably awarded grace for his loyalty and dedication to the Erdtree, in spite of being born as "graceless" Omen. Ironically, he mocks the player as "graceless Tarnished" before the fight.
• His other title is the Veiled Monarch of Leyndell, an alias he assumed as he was unable to publicly reveal himself an Omen to the denizens of the capital. There was a cut questline involving a nobleman of the capital who discovers the truth about their Veiled Monarch, much to their horror.^[10] Thus all of his public appearances, such as participating in battles, or hunting Tarnished and other champions, would be done under the guise of Margit, the Fell Omen.
