The Smithing Stone is a type of Bolstering Material used to upgrade weapons and armaments in Elden Ring. Smithing Stones come in several tiers, and also two types - the other being the Somber Smithing Stone used to upgrade "special" weapon types.

These rare items can be found from various sources, and are necessary to increase the abilities of your weapons and armaments, including their base damage, and the level of their attribute scaling that increase how much extra damage a weapon can deal depending on how high your stats are. It's important to note that just leveling up your character - and their Strength and Dexterity - won't matter as much unless you are also leveling up your weapon to output more damage.

At the start of the game, you can use the Smithing Table at the Church of Elleh in West Limgrave to upgrade weapons yourself, but only to a maximum of +3. After that, you'll need to make sure of the services of a master smith - either Smith Hewg at the Roundtable Hold, Or Iji on the northern road to Caria Manor in West Liurnia.

Almost all weapons are found at a base level of 0, and can be upgraded from +1 to +25 (or to +10 with Somber Smithing Stones) using multiple tiers of Smithing Stones from Smithing Stone [1] to Smithing Stone [8], with +25 requiring an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.

Smithing Stone Upgrade Chart

From the chart, you can see that for any given upgrade tier, you will need 12 stones of each type to reach the next upgrade tier (excluding the final tier for a +25 weapon). Once you have located all the Bell Bearings to buy Smithing Stones 1 through 8, it will cost 129,000 Runes to upgrade a weapon to +24.

Only 13 Ancient Dragon Smithing Stones can be attained in any one playthrough, and you'll have to go into New Game+ to get more.

Smithing Stone 1

Smithing Stone 1 is the most common Smithing Stone you can obtain, and is found in abundance in the early regions of Limgrave, including West Limgrave, East Limgrave, and the Weeping Peninsula. It also has a rare chance to drop from humanoid enemies like the Godrick or Exiled Soldiers.

Smithing Stone 1 can be bought in limited quantities from some early merchants, and in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 1 - for 200 Runes per stone.

Smithing Stone 2

Smithing Stone 2 is found in the more difficult areas of Limgrave and early versions of Liurnia, including the Weeping Peninsula, East Liurnia, North Liurnia, and West Liurnia. It also has a rare chance to drop from humanoid enemies like the Raya Lucarian Soldiers.

Smithing Stone 2 can be bought in limited quantities from some early merchants, and in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 1 - for 400 Runes per stone.

Smithing Stone 3

Smithing Stone 3 is found in some of the more difficult ares of the Liurnia Region, as well as the Siofra and Ainsel River Wells. It also has a rare chance to drop from Raya Lucarian Soldiers and Diggers in the Liurnia and Caelid regions.

Smithing Stone 3 can be bought in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 2 - for 600 Runes per stone.

Smithing Stone 4

Smithing Stone 4 is found in the areas of the Caelid Region, as well as some of the more difficult parts of the Siofra and Ainsel River Wells. It also has a rare chance to drop from the Redmane Soldiers and Leyndell Soldiers.

Smithing Stone 4 can be bought in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 2 - for 900 Runes per stone.

Smithing Stone 5

Smithing Stone 5 is found in the more dangerous parts of the Caelid region, as well many places in the Altus region, including Altus Plateau and Mt Gelmir - and the higher level underground areas of Nokron and Nokstella.

Smithing Stone 5 can be bought in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 3 - for 1,200 Runes per stone.

Smithing Stone 6

Smithing Stone 6 is found in the more dangerous regions of the Altus Plateau, including the Capital Outskirts and Leyndell, as well as the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds and Deeproot Depths below.

Smithing Stone 6 can be bought in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 3 - for 1,500 Runes per stone.

Smithing Stone 7

Smithing Stone 7 is found in the regions comprising the Mountaintops of the Giants, including the West and East parts of the mountaintops, and a few in the Consecrated Snowfield - as well as Crumbling Farum Azula.

Smithing Stone 7 can be bought in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 4 - for 2,500 Runes per stone.

Smithing Stone 8

Smithing Stone 8 is found in the toughest regions of the game, including the harder parts of the Mountaintops of the Giants and associated dungeons, like the Consecrated Snowfield, as well as dangerous areas like Crumbling Farum Azula, and Mohgwyn Palace.

Smithing Stone 7 can be bought in unlimited quantities from the Blind Maiden Husk once you have the Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 4 - for 3,600 Runes per stone.

Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone

The Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone is an incredibly rare and final type of smithing stone that is only found in very limited quantities - often from completing certain character questlines or defeating some of the toughest bosses in the late game areas.

This is the only type of stone that cannot be bought in unlimited quantities - you can only find so many in the game, and must go into the New Game+ to obtain more. The finite amount you can find are available in these locations and as quest rewards:

1. Rewarded by Castellan Jerren if you sided with him for the conclusion of Sorceress Sellen's Questline after a fight in the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
2. Rewarded by Nepheli Loux's questline in the throne room of Stormveil Castle.
3. Sold by Gatekeeper Gostoc after Nepeheli Loux's questline (if you did not kill him earlier) for 20,000 Runes.
4. Given or dropped by Gurranq after giving him all 9 Deathroot (To kill him for the stone instead, you must first defeat Blake Blade Maliketh).
5. Located at the East Mountaintops of the Giants, found inside the mouth of a giant's skull to the southeast of the Church of Repose.
6. Dropped by the Farum Azula Dragon in Crumbling Farum Azula that will ambush you in the southern part of the region.
7. Located on a corpse that can be found to the north of the Dragon Temple in Crumbling Farum Azula, on a floating platform guarded by a Beastman, using a pillar to reach the platform.
8. Dropped by another Farum Azula Dragon in Crumbling Farum Azula located to the southeast of the Dragon Temple Rooftop site of grace.
9. Dropped by defeating the two Night's Cavalry in the Consecrated Snowfield hidden region, located in the south portion of the region guarding a caravan.
10. Found inside the Yelough Anix Tunnel in the southwest part of the Consecrated Snowfield, located on a corpse after defeating an Alabaster Lord.
11. Located on a corpse on the tip of a frozen waterfall guarded by Great Wrym Theodorix on the east side of the Consecrated Snowfield, at the end of the frozen river dropping down into the Mountaintops of the Giants
12. Located inside Miquella's Haligtree dungeon, below a statue and guarded by a Leonine Misbegotten.
13. Also located within Miquella's Haligtree dungeon, found in a chest after you have defeated Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree - the midboss of the dungeon.
