Want to Play for USA (how teams are formed)? Each competition year our teams are formed through completion of the tryout process. Tryouts are open to all players, age and gender-specific. Tryouts are held over the course of several hours during mid-June.
Non-U.S. Citizens – A player born outside of the U.S., who is currently over the age of 18, may also complete and sign the First Registration form. U.S. Soccer will contact the foreign federation for confirmation, and once that is received, U.S. Soccer can clear the player.
In the past, there were no specific rules regarding playing for a particular country, and some players ended up representing different countries due to their families migrating. However, with changing rules, players must now hold legal citizenship of a country before being allowed to represent its national team.
Antonee Robinson and Sergiño Dest expected to start for USMNT in 2022 World Cup. Antonee Robinson (Fulham), Sergiño Dest (AC Milan), Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic FC), Gio Reyna (Borussia Dortmund) and Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas) are the players in question who were not born in the US.
The bulk of the money in most years is through so-called match fees: Each player called in to play for a national team receives an appearance fee (for being called in) and a performance bonus (extra money awarded for a win or a tie; teams get nothing extra if they lose).
The U.S. men have never won the World Cup, and have not advanced beyond the quarterfinals in over 90 years. The U.S. men have won a knockout match at the World Cup just once, that 2002 edition held jointly between South Korea and Japan, when they defeated Mexico in the Round of 16.
The mainstays on the USMNT all kept the numbers most fans are familiar with them wearing, led by Christian Pulisic (#10), Tyler Adams (#4), and Weston McKennie (#8).
Rapinoe helped the US women capture Olympic gold in 2012 at London and capture Women's World Cup crowns in 2015 and 2019. Her jersey is only the second to be retired by any NWSL team. Former US women's national soccer team star Megan Rapinoe will have her number 15 jersey retired by the Seattle Reign.
