What are DR/IQ advantages of ISO 64?
Feb 17, 2015
From someone who has used the D810, what are the advantages - besides shutter speeds - of ISO 64 over ISO 100?

Peak performance lives at base ISO

The D810's peak of dynamic range will be found at ISO 64. ISO 100 is still pretty close.

You will be have more light in image, sensor having lower amplification gain, thus you can have picture with less noise in shadows and more dynamic range.

Being able to use apertures like f2.8 in (slightly) brighter conditions without ND.

Just on the usefulness of iso64, besides minimizing noise:-
For me, I shoot art work. Some of the art pieces comprise of coloured neon /LED lights or often spot lights are used to highlight the artwork. The iso 64 enables me to reduce the potential forblown highlights and also the extent of the halo around neon/led lights.
For architecture, sometimes I need to have people with motion blur during daytime. As someone mentioned above usually this is done with a ND filter. With iso 64 you can have a slower shutter speed and around f8 during daytime.Guess iso 64 could be used for waterfalls, but I haven't done that.
Hope the above is useful.

Thanks all, these are great answers, I understand that base ISO is where DR would be greatest, as well as the advantages of being able to go 64 for longer shutter speeds, my question was: if I am shooting a landscape in good light at f8 or f11, how much cleaner will the file be -
And how much better will DR be - at ISO 64 compared to ISO 100? I am specifically looking at this as a potential reason to buy the D810 over other cameras, and am not sure if I am exaggerating the advantages.
Thanks!

On this point alone you are clutching at straws as they say, small difference in the shadows when pushing. However, the upgrade from the D800-D810 is large when you consider the variety of improvements! Namely better, faster, more accurate AF with fast and slow lenses, liveview that is a true 100% pixel representation rather than a blurry mess (great for LV manual focusing for landscape photography), very quiet shutter, ISO 64 etc...

What are you comparing:
D810 at ISO 64 vs. What camera at ISO 100?
If you are talking about a D800/D800e - difference will be minor.
If you are talking about the 5D MKIII - difference will be fairly big.
If you are talking about the Pentax 645Z - see what Ming has to say about it.

Using F8 - F11 shooting at base ISO for Landscapes - may as well save some money and get the D610 - it supposed to use the same sensor as the D750.
Now there is also the 36 vs 24 MP factor in play.
But from looking at the DXO scores - its not a lot of difference for DR and color depth - I believe their scores are at base ISO with exception of the low light testing.
So for me - if you are a landscaper shooting at F8/F11 on a tripod:
No frillsbuy - used D600
Value buy - used D800e
Luxury buy - new D810

There is a theoretical improvement of about 0.4 stops in dynamic range, according to dxomark (14.76 stops as against 14.36 at ISO 100). See http://www.dxomark.com/Cameras/Nikon/D810---Measurements and click on Dynamic Range.
To put it another way: very slightly more margin for error in exposure while still capturing the entire scene dynamic range.
I'd be very interested to see any real-life image that clearly demonstrates the extra dynamic range of ISO 64 against ISO 100.

From ISO 100 to ISO 50 it would be a full stop. From ISO 100 to ISO 64 it is about 3/4 of a stop of improvement (mathematically speaking). So it's not revolutionary, but it's not bad at all. Medium format cameras have been using ISO 64 fro a while as well, to add this extra 3/4 of a stop gain on DR and noise reduction. That help the the noise management of high megapixel sensors.
I have several pictures taken with my D810 at ISO 64 (and some few on ISO 31 as well). You can find them here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruimc/sets/72157646111761317/
I've heard from other D810 users that they find ISO 50 (boosted) even better than ISO 64, as a peak for DR and noise reduction. I have not run tests on that myself, though.
If I can, I go to ISO 64 as much as possible. But I don't fear, at all, shooting the D810 at high ISOs. Here are my samples at high ISOs as well: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ruimc/sets/72157650192131238/

Not disputing that, but given two choices a D810 or a D800E no one in their right mind would choose the former. The D810 is just a better camera, period.
