Why Are Four-Leaf Clovers So Hard To Find? (2024)

There are some things in life we just don't question, but kids have a lot of questions.

There are some things in life we just don't question, but kids have a lot of questions.

In this week's Kids Want To Know question, Chelsea asks, "Why are four-leaf clovers so hard to find?"

2 Wants To Know took Chelsea's question to Alamance County horticulture technician, Chris Stecker.

"The reason that it's hard to find four leaf clovers is because the actual name for white clover is trifolium, which means three leaves," said Stecker.

One in every 10,000 clover plants will have four leaves. That's why you can find one once in a while.

Stecker said a white clover is actually a perennial. That means it comes back every year.

"If you don't care for clovers so much you might have a problem getting it out of your lawn," said Stecker. "Clovers are often considered to be a lawn weed. It's actually an excellent plant. It actually adds fertilizer to the soil by taking nitrogen out of the air."

Stecker said that they actually plant a clover called crimson clover in a garden as a winter cover crop and till it in in the spring. It fertilizes that soil while also providing cover to the soil.

"There are a lot of other plants to that are called shamrock plants, which is actually a whole different kind of plant, or a whole other genius," said Stecker.
