Are there any soccer teams with the word "United" in them?
This may be a ridiculous question, but I conducted a Google search and was unable to find an answer, so here goes. Several British "football" (= American "soccer") teams (or clubs) appear to have names that include a city name followed by the word "United." Here are the results of my search: Chelsea Football Club London UK; Everton FC Liverpool UK; Leeds United FC Yorkshire UK; Manchester United FC Greater Manchester UK.
It seems that these five teams were all originally separate entities. They all came together to form one club at some point in time. Four of these teams are still active today, while the fifth team merged with another club to form a new entity. This evidence suggests that there are indeed other soccer teams with the word "United" in them.
Here is where things get tricky for me. If anyone has any additional information about these teams or others that I have not included, please let me know. I would love to add more names to this list.
Why do soccer teams use United?
Manchester United is so named because they represent the whole Greater Manchester area, rather than simply the city of Manchester. The club was founded in 1878 by the Glazer family who own the club today. Their first match was also against Edinburgh FC and they lost that game 1-0.
Soccer teams from different countries often take on each other to show their dominance within their region or worldwide. So the question is why would any team want to play against Manchester United? Well, they have won the English Premier League a record 11 times, which is one more than Liverpool who have also won it 11 times. They have also won the FA Cup more times than anyone else (12). And finally, they are still playing in the UEFA Champions League even though they were relegated from the Premier League back in 1992. So they remain as one of the top European clubs.
Looking at these facts, it can be said that Manchester United is one of the most successful clubs in the world. However, despite all their success they remain a big club with big ambitions. So when asked why would any team want to play against them?
How many football clubs have a town in their name?
In total, 17 clubs were given the moniker "Town." The term "United," as in Leeds United, Manchester United, and Sheffield United, was the second most prevalent, accounting for 15 teams. There are also two clubs called "Tottenham" - one in London and the other in North London.
The first club to be known as a town team was Darlington, whose name comes from its location near the town of Darlington in County Durham. The club was formed in 1883 and joined the newly formed Football League in 1888. They were immediately elected to the First Division, then as now the top tier of English football. Darlington was a successful club, with three League titles to their name by 1893. However, they were unable to prevent their division winning form declining, and they were eventually relegated in 1901. The club was re-promoted at the end of the season but was relegated again two years later. They have remained in the top flight since then, except for two seasons during World War II.
Darlington's identity as a town team was not intended as a tongue-in-cheek move like some modern club names. The club's owner actually lived in the nearby village of Bishop Middleton and gave his new team the same name as his old one.
How many Uniteds are in the Football League?
There are now 19 distinct suffixes used in club names in the English Football League, ranging from the ubiquitous United and City to the more unusual, such as Alexandra and Orient. The most common are simply the word "Club" followed by a surname or company name.
In addition to these two largest groups, other terms include Acorns, which is used by several clubs; Abbotsford, which is shared by two clubs; and Ashburton, which is used by one club.
The English Football League was founded in 1888, and until 1992, all clubs were required by law to be named after their city or town of residence. Starting in 1993, this rule was relaxed so that clubs could use any name they desired as long as it was not considered misleading or derogatory. As a result, many clubs have chosen to use nicknames or acronyms as their identity throughout the league.
For example, Leeds United FC is the current champion of the EFL Championship, while Derby County FC is second from bottom in the EFL League One. These two clubs are very different in terms of where they stand in the league system, but both can use the nickname "the Rams" or an abbreviation thereof as their official title.
Why are football teams called clubs?

There are about 1,500 football clubs in the English league system. Only 150 of these are designated "top flight", meaning they play in the Premier League or Championship.
About 7,000 people are employed in professional football clubs worldwide. Of these, about 500 are managers, while about 2,500 are staff members including coaches, doctors, nutritionists, and other support staff.
Football clubs can have different names but they always use the same game format with an initial kick-off between two sides who don't know each other before the match starts.
Why are football clubs called association football clubs?
The term "association" in association football refers to the international governing body for the sport: FIFA. There is no connection between the independent national organizations that play association football and call themselves "associations" (like the American Soccer Association or the Football Association in England), although they all adhere to FIFA rules and share some common policies on issues such as player compensation.
FIFA was founded in Switzerland in 1905, with the goal of uniting the world's soccer nations under one organization. The first international tournament was held the following year in Sweden. Countries such as United States, Canada, and Australia began competing at an international level in the 1950s and 1960s, but it was not until the 1970s that they started winning more than they lost. Since then, these countries have been dominant forces in the game.
In addition to these five official members, several other countries have competed in various international tournaments. However, none of them are considered full members of FIFA.
These eight countries account for nearly every championship available except for the Women's World Cup, which is dominated by the United States.
