Kate Winslet’s cottage from 'The Holiday' is on Airbnb – and it has an unexpected back story (2024)
If you're thinking of watching (or re-watching) The Holiday right around now, you are certainly not alone. The noughties rom-com is a Christmas classic – defined by its contrasting locations – Hollywood and Shere – the latter being an English country village where Kate Winslet resides in Rosehill Cottage. However, in reality, the pretty stone building is not entirely as it seems.
The original Rosehill Cottage is named Honeysuckle Cottage – and is located in Holmbury St Mary, Surrey – the south-eastern county that serves the movie's backdrop. You may be surprised to learn, though, that neither Kate Winslet nor Cameron Diaz ever actually stepped foot on the property.
Instead, researchers for the film scouted out the cottage before 'recreating it brick for brick' in a London studio, where filming took place. Therefore, despite being among the most recognizable properties in Surrey, Rosehill Cottage does not exist as we know it.
In real life, Honeysuckle Cottage belongs to Jon Bromley and his wife, Cressida, who were reportedly unaware of its significance until they noticed strangers taking photographs outside. Their home is an identical match to the one seen in the movie – from the wooden gate and picket fence to the front yard cottage garden.
Honeysuckle Cottage is now available on Airbnb, and while it is booked up for this Christmas (sorry), you can still enjoy some time there in 2023. There are currently some dates available for January and February, so there is a chance you might see some snow from the cottage window – though that can't be promised.
In the movie, Rosehill Cottage belongs to Kate Winslet's character, Iris, who arranges a home swap with LA-based Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz. Amanda consequently falls in love with Jude Law's character while navigating the English countryside.
Some of the film's most memorable scenes are set inside the property, so fans will be happy to know that Honeysuckle Cottage has similar cottage decorating ideas. The home has retained many original features, including wooden beams, an inglenook fireplace, and a log burner that complements the warming textiles and classic color scheme inside the living space.
Leading from the living room and kitchen, the home has two double bedrooms and a smaller single room.
There is also a bathroom and shower and a utility room. Beyond the quintessential brick walls, guests can enjoy a lush lawn and views of the Surrey Hillsthat surround the property.
On The Holiday's DVD commentary, the Production Designer Jon Hutman explained that he was searching for the 'cutest, smallest, most English cottage that we could find' when he came across Honeysuckle Cottage. And we're inevitably looking for reservations ASAP.
The cottage is owned by Jon and Cressida Bromley, UK-paper The Independent reported. They first saw the house in a real estate magazine and bought it for £625,000, or around $755,000, in 2019. They moved in with no knowledge that it inspired the Hollywood film, according to The Independent.
Once Jon and Cressida realised the popularity of the cottage, the pair made the decision to list their home on Airbnb. Guests can now stay for an average price of £295 a night, with bookings already made for Christmas, the New Year, and even as far ahead as summer 2023.
The cottage is owned by Jon Bromley and his wife Cressida, who bought the property in 2019 and decided to rent it out after learning of its popularity and link with the film, which was welcome news for fans of The Holiday, even if only for a short period.
Although the Rosehill Cottage of the film doesn't exist in reality - the exteriors were built from scratch in a field and the interiors are sets - Honeysuckle Cottage in Holmbury St Mary (which was for sale in 2021 and is now available on Airbnb) provided inspiration for the crew who designed it.
If a property you are interested in booking does not provide towels, ask if they have sets to rent. If not, bring your own, but check the small print in their terms and conditions to see what else they don't provide before booking.
But given her huge house and successful career, fans of the movie are equally shocked by Cameron's young age too. She was 34 when cast as Amanda. "Definitely wasn't prepared to learn that Kate Winslet was 31 and Cameron Diaz was 34 in 2006 classic The Holiday," someone else chimed in online.
Though the cottage was recreated on a London soundstage for the actual filming, the real Honeysuckle Cottage is just as stunning as its facsimile looked on the silver screen. You can even rent it out if you need an English escape for the holidays.

The film was primarily shot in Southern California and the villages of Shere and Godalming in Surrey. Iris (Kate Winslet) swaps her idyllic English cottage with Amanda's (Cameron Diaz) luxurious 10,000 square foot home in San Marino estate, Southern California.
The UK part of the film was partially shot in Godalming and Shere, a town and village in the county of Surrey in South East England that dates back to the 11th century. The cottage's exterior was constructed in a field adjacent to St James's Church in Shere.
It reportedly snowed three times in Surrey during filming, but the crew had already hired a snow machine because they hadn't counted on any of the white stuff falling. According to Cameron Diaz in an interview with Vulture, the fake snow that was used was all “totally biodegradable”.
Meyers put a lot of her own life experience into the characters. While she was writing the screenplay, she was inspired by real-life encounters that inspired her to change the story. For example, she herself ended up on a home-exchange website while trying to find a place to stay while on vacation.
leaving the page. Kate Winslet and director Nancy Meyers have dashed the hopes of The Holiday fans by debunking the rumour of a sequel being in the pipeline.

Cottage areas have less demand, more land available, and a relatively sparse population. When you purchase a cottage property, your money goes further because the land is less expensive. These, overall, make cottage properties more affordable. It could even be a terrific option as a first home.
